The Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) will clean itself as part of normal operation. Several factors including fuel consumed, hours of engine operation, and miles are driven are monitored by the Engine Control Module (ECM). The self-cleaning occurs approximately once per tank of fuel. Under certain driving conditions, such as extended idling, stop-and-go traffic, etc., the DPF cannot clean itself.

What Does the P2463 GMC Code Mean?

The soot particles accumulate in the channels of the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) and are burned off at regular intervals, through a process called regeneration or cleaning. The DPF cleaning process prevents the DPF from clogging. Excess soot in the filter can cause a drop in engine performance and crack the filter during regeneration. The Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) will be set when the ECM detects that the Diesel Particulate Filter is clogged and needs service regeneration.
